Travel Guide

We hope we have helped you plan your trip to Rainbow Mountain, but here are some additional tips to help you enjoy it even more:

  • Make sure you book with a reputable company and all the tour inclusions. If you don’t want to go to the trouble, book this Rainbow Mountain tour, with great reviews from other travelers.
  • Rest the night before and prepare your backpack in advance so you can make the most of your sleep.
  • Wear warm clothes and dress in layers. The  Colors Mountain trek runs at altitude, so it can be cold, but you will also be walking and may be overdressed at times. A raincoat may also come in handy.
  • Don’t forget good hiking boots. The ground can be slippery due to humidity or rain.
  • Bring sunscreen, hat and sunglasses. Remember that you will be at high altitude and the sun is stronger.
  • Walk slowly, take it easy. There is no need to be first.
  • Don’t eat too much breakfast so that you don’t feel bad with the altitude.
  • Leave the unnecessary things on the bus and go light. The less stuff you carry, the less it will cost you to walk.
  • Don’t forget to bring water (1 liter or 1.5 liters may be fine) and a snack to give you energy such as nuts or a banana. Drink water in small sips. If possible, chew coca leaves. In Pampachiri you have some stalls where you can buy this kind of things.
  • Be a responsible traveler, do not take pictures with llamas or alpacas and avoid using horses that are not in good condition.
  • Try to do the tour to the Mountain of the colors between the months of March to October. The rainiest months are December, January and February. August is usually the best month.
  • It is recommended that you have spent a few days in another high altitude place like Cusco to acclimatize. Do not make the excursion to the Seven Colors Mountain directly from Lima.
  • Remember to take out a good travel insurance to Peru that covers adventure activities such as trekking.
  • Don’t miss these other tips for traveling to Peru that we prepared after our trip.
