Hike to the Inti Punk Sun Gate
The Inti Punku Sun Gate or the Puerta del Sol, is a sacred Inca construction that lies high in the mountains above the town of Ollantaytambo in the Sacred Valley.
This 1 day tour from Cusco, takes you on a journey through Inca antiquity, along the Cachicata Trail, to the famous red granite quarry that once serviced the construction of the town below.
The 3 hour hike up the mountain, culminated at the Gate of the Sun. An ancient center of worship to the Inca gods: the mountains, the sun, the stars, the moon and the earth. From there you will be treated to a panoramic view of the snow-capped peak of Mount Verónica and the surrounding Vilcanota Mountain range.
The Inti Punku and Cachicata Full Day Trek begins with pick up at 04:30 am to 04:45am from your hotel in Cusco.
Your private transportation will then drive through the Sacred Valley of the Incas for 2 hours, until you reach the town of Ollantaytambo at 2,800 m / 9,186 ft. Here you will be treated to a hearty breakfast before preparing yourself for the hike.
At 7:00 am, you’ll follow your tour guide up the Cachicata Trail alongside secluded waterfalls, ancient terraces and local fauna, for 2 hours until you reach the Cachicata Quarry at 3,600 m / 11,808 ft. This is the principal quarry that supplied the materials, primarily pink granite, that the Pre-Inca and Inca civilizations used to construct their temples and palaces in the town of Ollantaytambo. You will also be treated to a spectacular bird’s eye view of Ollantaytambo and the Urubamba River from the viewpoint.
Once you have explored the quarry and taken some souvenir photos of the view, you will sit down and enjoy a box lunch amidst the backdrop of the hills of the Sacred Valley.
After lunch, you will continue ascending up the trail for a further 1 hour to the magical Inti Punku Sun Gate at 3,900 m / 12795 ft. This ancient stone structure once served as a center of worship to the Inca gods: the mountains, the sun, the stars, the moon and the earth. Through the center of the gate, you will have a breathtaking view of the snow-capped peak of Apu Vernonica and the Vilcanota Mountain range.
Retracing your steps back down the Cachicata Trail, you will pass by many large stones that didn’t manage to complete the long voyage down to the town.
After a 2-hour descent, you will arrive back at the town of Ollantaytambo, ready to take your private transportation back to Cusco city. Approximate arrival time at your hotel is 18:30pm.
