The Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu is located in the province of Urubamba, Cusco Region. It comprises an extensive cultural and natural landscape located in diverse ecosystems, in which there are also other archaeological sites connected by roads leading to the Inca city. Machu Picchu is the most outstanding Inca archaeological site for its creative urban design, the beauty of its architecture and the fine stonework of its constructions. Its planning took advantage of the topography of the mountain top, transforming it into an imposing llaqta. It was built in the 15th century by the Inca Pachacuteq, abandoned in the early years of the Spanish colony and rediscovered in 1911. The architecture of this Inca city, embodied in its 200 enclosures, combines exceptionally well with the wonderful natural environment to which it is closely linked.

Known as the lost city of the Incas, Machupicchu is one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World since 2007 for tours, considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983. It is located in the district of Machupicchu, province of Urubamba, 130 km from the city of Cusco. The archaeological zone itself is accessible through the Inca roads or through the Hiram Bingham road, which ascends the slope of the Machupicchu mountain from the train station in the town of Aguas Calientes. The tourist flow to the citadel of Machupicchu has shown an average annual growth of 6.9% for the period 2007 – 2012. Tour in 2012 the arrival of tourists to the Inca Citadel was 1,114,434 (352,000 nationals and 762,000 foreigners, approximately), higher than the figure reached in 2011 Tour (971,642). The proportion of tourists in Machu Picchu by origin has remained fairly unchanged in recent years, about 70% foreigners and 30% nationals with tour.
In 2007, UNESCO recommended setting the maximum capacity of Machu Picchu at 2,500 visitors per day for the tour. Throughout 2011, more than 3,000 tickets were sold per day for each tour during peak tourist months, which resulted in the UNESCO recommendation being accepted, finally limiting the capacity of the ruins (with certain months of flexibility for adaptation).
