This is the hard one. The trail that really tests you. Forget the crowds and the bus tours; this is just you, the mountains, and a ruin that feels like you discovered it yourself.

Choquequirao: What It Is

Think of it as Machu Picchu’s wild cousin. It’s tucked away in the Vilcabamba range, a massive site sprawled across a ridge high above the Apurímac River. The air is thin and the silence is absolute.

The Trek Itself: What to Expect

This isn’t a walk. It’s a proper expedition. You start in Cachora, a small town where the real Peru begins. From there, you go down. Way down, into the Apurímac canyon. Then you go up. Way up, to the ruins. It’s a brutal elevation change that makes your legs burn and your lungs ache. The whole thing is roughly 64 kilometers of raw mountain trail.

The path is the only way in or out. There are no trains to bail you out, no hotels, just basic campsites. You carry what you need. This physical challenge is part of the experience, stripping everything else away. You’re just a person walking an ancient path.

The Landscape and Its Life

The environment shifts constantly. One moment you’re in dry, high-altitude grass with views that go on forever. Then you dip into a cloud forest, damp and green, with moss on the trees.
